Doesn’t the body have a system to filter and get rid
of all these chemicals that we are exposed to?
Yes the body can get rid of some
of these chemicals but not all. Yes our bodies have a system
that allows us to metabolise and excrete unnecessary chemicals,
however with the huge amount of new chemicals in circulation
each year (approximately 1000 are added each year in the
cosmetic industry alone) our bodies are now having to deal
with more chemicals than ever before. Put simply when the
rate of chemicals entering the body exceeds the body’s
ability to process and excrete them, the remaining chemicals
accumulate. Most commonly chemicals accumulate in our fatty
tissues. These levels slowly build up over the years and
may cause toxicity and injury or disease. When chemicals
do pass through the body they are still processed by the
bowel, lungs, liver or kidneys before being expelled.
Exposure to chemicals comes in many forms, from the food
we eat and the containers it is packaged in, to personal
care items, off gassing surfaces in the home and office,
cleaning products, local pollution, garden products and the
list goes on.
Children and in particular children from conception to two
years of age are highly susceptible to dangerous chemical
intake due to poor ability to metabolise chemicals, high
skin surface area and permeability and high fat percentage.
In addition to this, children eat more as a percentage of
their body weight than adults and therefore are prone to
a higher chemical intake via pesticides and additives in
food.
CleanLife encourages people to reduce their chemical intake
via food, personal care, cleaning and food products. Simply
put many of the chemicals in conventionally produced food,
toiletries, cleaning and gardening products have been proven
time and time again to be carcinogenic, why risk it?

If cosmetic chemicals are so dangerous
why don’t hairdressers
and beauty therapists have more health problems?
They do and this finding has been replicated by various high
quality scientific studies. Hairdressers have extremely high
levels of contact dermatitis. Beauty therapists have increased
risk of lung cancer and a high risk of uterine and ovarian
cancer. Both groups also have high risk of breast, digestive
and respiratory cancer.

Why does organic food seem to cost more?
The cost of organic food represents the cost of well produced,
quality food. The artificially low prices for conventional
food found in supermarkets reflect mass production and
plantings, high chemical use and low labour requirements.
Organic farming is more costly. Fields are left to fallow
between crops, crops are rotated to allow optimal soil enrichment,
and hand weeding is performed rather than dangerous pesticides.
If you want to support chemical based farming that damages
our health, our soil, and our waterways then you can probably
save a little money. If however you want to support a farming
method that prevents chemical exposure for your and your
family, the farmer and protects our environment, then Organic
produce is for you. In the case of dairy and animals if you
don’t want to be exposed to unnecessary growth hormones
and antibiotics, then Organic farming is your option. If
finances are an issue try buying more fresh produce and less
processed food, it’s better for you and better for
your bank balance.

Does organic produce taste better?
Personally I would say yes, absolutely. Obviously this
is a personal thing, however everyone I have given
blind tastings to have chosen the organic over conventional
grown fruit and veggies. As the resident chocoholic
I think you just can’t go past organic dark chocci and organic wine
(in small amounts of course!). Tony loves organic dairy
produce. But don’t take our word for it, go out
and try it!
