Hi, welcome to this weeks Come Clean newsletter

Could creating vegetable patches on our front verges be a solution for fresher faster food, decreased greenhouse gas production and a revival of community spirit?

THE DIRT
"Twenty one per cent of the Earth's energy is used in the production and distribution of food. If we grow our own food, (and there's enough space in the typical backyard to be self-sufficient in fruit and vegetables), we would be substituting human energy for non-renewable fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are needed to plough, to harvest, transport, package, refrigerate and distribute our food. Every step along this distribution trail reduces the nutritional value and freshness of food." (Digger's Club www.diggers.com.au)

Why do most of us have lawn on our verge?
An idealistic idea it may be, but if each street or street section planted various vegetables on the verge most of us could enjoy;
. fresh organic vegetables daily
. less trips to the shop
. a revival of community spirit as we share vegetables and perhaps recipes and even meals
. positive play for child gardeners
. Growing your own food cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 25% and the average family can be self sufficient in fruit and veg with an area of 12m x 9m.

Of course there may be a few problems;
. where do you put your bin for collection?
. no place to park your cars for parties (this could be a good thing by encouraging car pooling and public transport!)
. some neighbours may like to use conventional pesticides on their crops
. local dogs may like to make their mark on the patch (direct them to the citrus!)
. some local councils may have issue with vegetable verges?

But surely these problems can be overcome? We'd be interested to know what you think.
