THE DIRT
Research shows around 1 in 3 of all fruit and vegetables on sale in Australia carry residues of one or more pesticides.

Already an organic convert? See below for our suggested online organic grocery stores.

Why go organic?
- According to the World Health Organisation, "Harmful pesticide residues can contaminate the environment and accumulate in ecosystems, thus entering the human food chain."

- Fresh organic produce  has much lower levels of harmful herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, artificial fertilizer chemicals, antibiotics and hormones that are present in non-organic produce

- Fresh organic produce contains on average 50% more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other micro-nutrients than conventional produce

- Organic foods are especially high in antioxidants, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus

- Researchers have seen an escalating increase of certain types of cancers such as lymphoma, breast, uterine and prostate cancers and leukaemia, that have been linked to chemicals used in agriculture

- Studies have found that levels of antioxidants in milk from organic herds were up to 90% higher than in milk from conventional herds

Environmental Benefits
- Organic is good for the soil. Organic farming methods are based on scientific understanding of soil science and ecology
- Organic places emphasis on animal welfare
- Organic aims to reduce dependence on non-renewable resources and aims to ensure sustainability

Affordability
- According to Shane Heaton, nutritionist and author of Organic Farming, Food Quality and Human Health, "The higher price is the real price of real food, paid now, not later in environmental and health care costs externalised by industrial agriculture. More and more consumers are realising that they can buy good food or cheap food, but not good cheap food."
