THE DIRT
The average women uses 11 000 tampons in her lifetime! Most sanitary products are made from chlorine bleached cotton.
Cotton crops take up only 3% of the world's arable land, yet use around 25% of all global pesticides. Some of the pesticides used in cotton farming are known carcinogens, while others are suspected or probable carcinogens. Read More.
Dioxin, an organochlorine, is a 'human carcinogen' and is a by-product of various natural and industrial sources, including, the manufacturing process of many chlorinated products such as paper pulp, used in the manufacture of tampons and sanitary towels. Dioxins are Persistant Organic Pollutants.
Most sanitary products are chlorine bleached and low level dioxin residues have been found in some end products.
While high grade exposure to dioxin is thought to increase cancer risk, low grade exposure had been linked to hormone disruption, developmental defects in babies and children, low sperm counts and immune system supression.
Read the World Health Organisation article.
Dioxin has been positivley correlated with endometriosis in some studies. Read the Toxicological Sciences paper.
Good news for women who suffer from thrush, vaginitis or soreness; converting to organic cotton sanitary products is reported to help some women with these conditions, so perhaps it is worth a try!
G SPOT
Please forward this on to concerned females everywhere. From an environmental perspective converting to organic cotton or reuseable sanitary products makes an incredible difference. While studies into possible health risks continue, I am not waiting for the results to make the switch!
