Hi , welcome to this weeks Come Clean newsletter

Organic Milk: a treat for the taste buds and a blessing for the body......

THE DIRT
Milk - pure, white, refreshing and somehow comforting, but what exactly is in the modern version of this product that we think of as a wholesome and nourishing treat?

Health Impact:
. A study conducted by Jacob Holm from the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences found that Organic Milk has h
igher levels of nutrients and vitamins than conventional milk, with 50% greater vitamin E, 75% more beta-carotene, and 2 to 3 times higher levels of certain antioxidants.

. Studies in Scotland in 2004 and 2006 have revealed that Organic milk is between 68% and 71% higher in Omega 3, and has a better Omega 3 to 6 ratio.

. Organic dairy cows feed on pastures on which synthetic pesticides (including insecticides, fungicides or herbicides) are not used. Non-organic dairy farms use up to 500 different pesticides with conventional mixed farms (crops and dairy) having up to 1550 synthetic pesticides to choose from.

. Organic dairy cows are not permitted to eat genetically modified feed, nor are they to be given animal derivatives in their food.

. Organic dairy cows are given antibiotics when they are unwell.  Conventional dairy cows are often given routine antibiotics to prevent illness.

. In December 2001 a UK government report revealed that the dangerous pesticide Lindane was present in 8% of non-organic milk. Lindane has been found to be a hormone disruptor and has been linked to birth defects, sexual developmental problems and breast cancer.

Organic Milk has 5 times the amount of conjugated linoleic acid (a cancer fighting compound) which is thought to be due to the grass based diet.

Eco-Benefits:
. The UK Soil association found that organic milk production is 38% more energy efficient than conventional milk production.

. Many of the pesticides used on conventional farms are toxic to wildlife and disrupt the natural eco-system. Organic farms have been found to have a higher density and variety of wildlife.
