THE DIRT
Hormone Growth promotants and antibiotics are routinely used in conventional livestock farming in Australia, and have been since 1979. According to recent reports, about three-quarters of all antibiotics consumed in Australia are administered to animals.
Contrary to popular belief, growth hormones have not been used in Australian chooks since the 1960s, however 'digestion enhancing' antibiotics are routinely used, with the purpose of promoting speedy growth.
Feed
Conventionally raised animals can feed on pellets that may contain genetically modified ingredients. There is concern regarding the long term effects of genetic modification in our food sources. While the full effects are unknown, recent research in the area found some concerning results. Read more about Genetic Modification.
Hormones
Sex hormones can be used to speed up the development of livestock so they can mature rapidly. Eating meat that contains unacceptably high levels of these hormones is thought to create unwanted side effects, including breast enlargement and ovarian cysts.
Antibiotics in animal farming
Antibiotics are drugs that kill bacteria. They are used in animal farming to promote growth and cut down the amount of feed required. The over-use of antibiotics may increase the possibility of breeding antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria
Processing
Chlorine and Ammonia are often used in the processing of meat
What's so good about Organic Meat?
. Routine use of antibiotics is banned (minimal antibiotics may be used to treat sick animals only)
. The use of growth promotants is banned
. The animals are fed on organic food (which is GE free)
. Animals have access to open pasture.
. NO recorded cases of BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy - also known as Mad-Cow Disease) originating from Organic animals
. The word is that Organic Meat tastes a whole lot better!
. Organic chickens spend the day outside and when it is time to snuggle up in the shed, they still have around 7 times the space of conventional chooks.
One of the best things about organic meat is that the feed that the animals graze on, and the land which they roam on, is totally free from pesticides and chemicals, therefore we have no chance of ingesting meat that has had any contact with said chemicals, either from grazing or on the production line
