THE DIRT
Many of us have cut out the additives in our food, made the switch to organic for most (or at least part) of our dietary intake and avoid some of the products laden with synthetic chemicals when cleaning ourselves and our homes. So the question begs, would it be beneficial to do the same for our pets?
A growing number of veterinarians state that processed pet food may be a cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog and cat. A 1995 article in the British Journal of Small Animal Practice found that processed pet food can weaken the immune system and lead to liver, kidney, heart and other diseases.
Corn and wheat are the most common grains used in pet food. Pet foods usually contain the leftovers after the grain has been processed, so the nutritional value is generally poor.
Mycotoxins, potentially deadly fungal toxins that multiply in moldy grains, have been found in pet foods. In January 2007 more than 100 dogs in the US were reported dead from mycotoxins in pet food from 19 different products which were all subsequently recalled. It is thought that surviving dogs could develop liver disease /cancer and or other chronic diseases.
Harmful chemicals and preservatives are added to both wet and dry food.
. sodium nitrite, a colouring agent and preservative and potential carcinogen
. ethoxyquin (an insecticide that has been linked to liver cancer)
. BHA and BHT, are often used and also suspected of causing cancer.
. The average dog can consume as much as 11kgs of preservatives a year!
Pet Pesticides and Wash products
Like their human counter parts conventional pesticides and personal care products for animals often contain a cocktail of toxic synthetic chemicals. The good news is natural alternatives are on the rise! We'll have more pet specific personal care information in future email tips.
