Hi , welcome to this weeks Come Clean newsletter

Natural Sun Protection
Protecting your skin and the waterways this summer.............

THE DIRT
Many sunscreens are made from a variety of synthetic chemical compounds,
many of which have been associated with adverse health effects, ranging from eczema to cancer.

We all need to 'SLIP SLOP SLAP' to protect ourselves from the damaging effects of the suns rays. However what we choose to 'SLAP' on is equally important.

There are two main forms of sunscreen;

PHYSICAL or BARRIER Sunscreens
These usually have zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as active ingredients. They work by reflecting UV radiation.

CHEMICAL Sunscreens
These Work by absorbing UV radiation. Some of the active ingredients in these creams have been associated with eczema, cancer, photosensitivity and other adverse health reactions.

Some of the Chemical 'active ingredients' to look out for are listed below;
Para-amino benzoic acid (PABA)
Amyl paradimethylarninobenzoate (Padimate A)
Octyl methoxycinnamate
2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA)
benxophenone
dibenzoylmethane
octyl salicylate

Unfortunately it is not only the active ingredients that may be of concern, in 1996 the 'Physicians Weekly' reported FDA concerns over synergistic chemicals in sunscreens and their link to skin lesions. (Kevin Farrow in Skin Deep 2002)

Swiss toxicologist Margret Schlumpf found that they have hormone-like effects, altering sexual development and reproduction in rats. While further research is needed to confirm the effects on humans, flow into the waterways has created 'gender bending' effects in fish and other aquatic organisms.

While there have been some  recent investigations into Nano technology used in some barrier sunscreens, the results so far have been inconclusive and barrier sunscreens are still thought to be the safest option. Read the Australian Government Report

Overall the safest bet seems to be; cover up, stay in the shade and choose a plant based physical barrier sunscreen.
