THE DIRT
‘What is in Lipstick?’
Most lipsticks contain phthalates ( these can cause kidney and liver damage), possible human carcinogens (butylated hydroxytoluene and polyethylene) and artificial colours derived from coal tar
There are also reports of lead in conventional lipsticks
If you apply lipstick daily, then you could ingest about 4.5kg of lippy in your lifetime
‘What should I avoid?’
Read your labels carefully and avoid all products that contain:
1. Aluminium (may be linked to Alzheimer's disease)
2. Parabens (also named parahydroxy benzoate)
3. Coal tar colours (especially FD&C and D&C)
4. Diethanolamine (DEA)
5. Phthalates
6. Diazolidinyl urea
7. Propylene glycol
Unfortunately there are no regulations controlling use of the words ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ on cosmetics packages, so make sure you know where your lipstick comes from and how it is made. See the bottom of this email for tips on protecting your kids from cosmetic toxins.
‘Is my lipstick safe?’
If you are unsure about the toxicity of your own lipstick, you should go to http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ and see if it is listed on the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database
