THE DIRT
Flowers
- According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), conventionally produced flowers are grown using a wide variety of chemicals (such as insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers and many more)
- Some of these chemicals have been linked to birth defects, neurological diseases and cancer in humans
- A Danish study has shown that horticultural and agricultural workers have a higher risk of Parkinson’s Disease due to exposure to neurotoxic pesticides like organophosphates
- Imported flowers are exempt from pesticide regulations as they are not an edible crop, and are therefore not screened for residues
- If you want your mum to have a nice bunch of flowers for Mother’s Day, then buy local and organic flowers where possible

Green Wrapping and Cards
- It is estimated that each year 70,000 ha of native Australian forests are cleared for woodchips used in the production of paper products
- Buy recycled or make your own cards and paper, using old cards or magazines.
