THE DIRT
A study conducted by the University of NSW suggests that standby power (when appliances are left on standby) accounts for up to 11.6% of Australia’s household electricity consumption, which is the equivalent to more than 1,000,000 cars on the road
-This costs the average Australian household about $100 per year in wasted energy consumption.
-For each dollar spent on energy efficient appliances, two dollars are saved in generation, transmission and distribution costs.
Energy Efficient Temperatures
- Each degree of increase in the temperature of an air conditioner (in summer) can reduce household cooling costs by up to 10%
- It is recommended that the following appliances are used between particular temperature ranges for maximum efficiency:
Hot water storage tank 60 degrees C
Hot water from tap 50 degreesC
Summer cooling 24 to 26 degrees C
Winter heating 19 to 21 degreesC
Fridge 3 to 5 degreesC
Freezer -18 to -15 degrees C
Black is the new Green
- Did you know that it takes 25% more energy to display the colour white compared to the colour black on a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) computer monitor?
-To reduce your use of the colour white, you can use the search engine Blackle (www.blackle.com) instead of Google
